Who is Kraven? Born and raised in Russia, aristocrat Sergei Kravinoff, known as Kraven the Hunter, became one of the world's greatest hunters, seeking to regain his lost sense of Tsarist nobility. Kravinoff discovered his immense hunting skills while working in Kenya, Africa, where he began using traditional tools before choosing to hunt large animals with his bare hands.

With the help of his companion, the voodoo priestess Calypso, Kraven consumed a herbal potion that enhanced his physical abilities, granting him the strength, speed and senses of a wild cat. The potion also slowed his aging, allowing him to maintain his vitality and fitness for many years. At some point, traditional hunting began to bore him, until his half-brother, the Chameleon, offered him a chance to hunt Spider-Man, offering him a new challenge. Despite the Chameleon's help, the plan failed and Kraven was expelled from the United States, but he soon returned to the Chameleon's side, only to be captured by Iron Man.

Unable to defeat Spider-Man alone, Kraven joined the Sinister Six, a team of supervillains led by Doctor Octopus. Over time, Kraven's inability to defeat the Spider-Man took a toll on his sanity. After finally gaining the upper hand on the hero and believing he had regained his honor, the tormented Kraven took his own life. Resurrected and cursed, he battled Spider-Man, even donning the superhero's costume. In a letter to his son, Kraven expressed his pride and bequeathed his name and title to him, making him the new Kraven the Hunter.
