Star Wars ( originally named by its French title, Star Wars) is a fantasy and science fiction universe created by George Lucas in 1977. First conceived as a cinematographic trilogy released between 1977 and 1983, the saga was then expanded with three new films released between 1999 and 2005 recounting events prior to the first trilogy. The first trilogy (episodes IV, V and VI) as well as the second trilogy called "Prelogy" (episodes I, II and III) have been a huge commercial success and a generally positive critical reception. For the sake of consistency and to achieve a result that he had not been able to obtain from the start, the creator of the saga also reworked the films of his first trilogy, released in 1997 and 2004 in new versions.
Light Side
Driven by the ideal of Good, people affiliated with the Light work to serve others in symbiosis with the Force. The basic principles are benevolence, assistance and preservation. Vivid emotions are prohibited such as hatred and fear considered to be linked to the Dark Side. Its followers uphold the peace and maintain the balance of the Force in the galaxy.
They also have a "deistic" conception of the Force, which they refer to as a kind of benevolent supernatural entity that guides the action of living beings in the galaxy. This is particularly illustrated by the expression "May the Force be with us". The goal of a Jedi is to enter into communion with the Force through the Light in order to access absolute wisdom.
Dark Side
Fear, hatred, aggression and ambition are the foundations of the Dark Side. Its followers have the sole objective of increasing their powers to eventually dominate their rivals. Dark side powers are usually not used for others but always for personal gain. The Dark Side is also addictive: the more you embrace it and accumulate powers, the more you want to strengthen your ties with the Dark Side and its powers. The Sith's conception of the Force is more utilitarian. It is only a power of Nature, which they must learn to master, to tame. And even if it were endowed with a will of its own, a Sith can only be fulfilled by managing to bend it to his own. It is in this that they stand out from the Jedis, dark or luminous, considered as playthings of the Force in one sense or another, whereas a Sith acquires total freedom, freed from the laws of the Universe, in absolute mastery of the dark side. This vision, however, is more characteristic of the ancient Sith Empires than of Palpatine's personal dictatorship: the latter often evokes the Dark Side as a deity, like an evil alter-ego of the Light, and mentions the notion of "Destiny" several times for convince Luke to join him.
Paradoxically, love is just as proscribed among the Jedis as among the Siths. The Jedi Order sees it as too much of an emotion, likely to lead to the Dark Side; and conversely, the Siths believe that it risks leading to the Light through the affective relationship it induces. Thus Anakin Skywalker went to the Dark Side to save his wife Padmé Amidala, and will return to the Good Side to save his son Luke.
It will be noted that the expression "dark side" is frequently used in culture to designate the temptation to use immoral means to achieve objectives that one considers just.
