CONCORD DILIGENCE
Model Trailways Concord Stagecoach 1:12 Scale Wood and Metal Kit The Abbott Downing Company of Concord, New Hampshire built its first stagecoach in 1827.
These cars were used for passenger and courier service between St.
Louis and San Francisco .
Abbott produced coaches for Wells Fargo and Butterfield Overland Stage.
Weighing over two tons, the cars were solidly built.
The bodies rested on leather suspenders - not for the comfort of the passengers, but to avoid injuring the horses.
The wheels were dried white oak to withstand heat and cold.
Leather "boots" on the front and back of mail bags and luggage.
The interior was just over 4 'wide and 4-1 / 2' high.
Three benches provided seating for nine passengers.
They traveled day and night, suffering from suffocating dust and sweltering heat in summer, intense cold in winter, and the ever-present threat of thieves and hostile Indians.
After completing the 2,812 mile journey, a newspaper correspondent wrote: “If I hadn't crossed the route I would be perfectly willing to go back, but now I know what it is.
hell.
I just turned 24 days old.
”An act of congress interrupted the postal service of stagecoaches on June 30, 1861.
The era of stagecoaches ended with the completion of the transcontinental railroad in 1869.
Our kit reproduced the original with steerable wooden wheels, functional suspension and opening doors.
Cast metal wheel hubs, axles and door hinges; brass bands, rods, nails, nuts and bolts and photo-etched brass pieces add authentic details.
The driver's bench is perched on top of the wagon and the interior is complete with seating for nine.
The decal sets for Wells Fargo and Butterfield let you choose which version you like.
