German Panther G - Late Version

"Panther" is the common name for a medium-sized tank deployed by Nazi Germany during World War II that served from mid-1943 to the end of the war in Europe in 1945.

The Panther's excellent combination of firepower, mobility and protection served as a benchmark for other countries' tank designs at the end of the war and immediately after, and it is often considered one of the best tanks of World War II.

While sharing essentially the same engine as the Tiger I tank, it had better frontal armor, better gun penetration, was lighter overall and therefore faster, and could handle rough terrain better than the Tigers.

The tradeoff was weaker side armor; the Panther proved deadly in open country and long-range fire, but vulnerable in close combat.

In addition, the 75mm gun fired a slightly smaller shell than the Tiger's 88mm gun, providing less explosive firepower against infantry, although it was still very effective.

The Panther was also much cheaper to produce than the Tiger tanks, and only slightly more expensive than the Panzer IV, as its design came about at the same time that the Reich Ministry of Armaments and War Production was making great efforts to increase war production.

Key elements of the Panther's design, such as the armor, transmission, and final drive, were compromised specifically to improve production rates and meet Germany's wartime shortages, while other elements such as its very compact engine and complex suspension system remained with their elegant but intricate engineering.

As a result, production of the Panther tanks was much higher than what was possible for the Tiger tanks, but not much more than what had been accomplished with the Panzer IV.

At the same time, the simplified final drive became the primary cause of Panther tank failures, a problem that was never corrected.
