Product description : SM79 Sparviero
First designed and produced as a civil aircraft by SIAI-Marchetti in the 1930s, the SM79 Sparviero achieved significant speed records during this period. With a typical three-engine low-wing configuration, it had a structure of wood, canvas and metal. Subsequently re-configured in military variants, it was widely used by the Italian Regia Aeronautica during the Second World War, notably as a bomber in the Mediterranean theater, then as a torpedo bomber. Recognizable by its “hump” behind the cockpit, with its three 750hp Alfa Romeo 126 RC34 radial engines, it was capable of reaching a maximum speed of 430km/h. In its role as a bomber it was relieved by various other more modern aircraft, but the 'Sparviero' was very effective throughout the confl ict in maritime torpedoing operations in the hands of experienced crews.To learn more about size and scale, click here.
