The Sukhoi Su-30, designated in Russian “Сухой Су-30” and known under the NATO code “Flanker-C” is a multi-role jet fighter aircraft initially Soviet, then Russian. This model was developed to meet various military needs, distinguished by its versatility and advanced capabilities.

The Su-30SM version is a specialized variant of the Su-30MKM with vector thrust. It was specifically designed for the Russian army and produced by the Irkut company. This new version incorporates several improvements requested by the Russian military, such as updates to the radar, radio communications systems, the Friend-Foe Identification (IFF) system, ejection seats, weaponry, as well as other internal systems of the aircraft. Notable equipment on the Su-30SM includes the Bars-R radar and a wide-angle head-up display.

A contract signed in March 2012 provided for the delivery of 60 aircraft by 2016. The Su-30SM made its first flight on September 21, 2012, marking an important step in strengthening the capabilities of the Russian Air Force.
