Product description : Flakpanzer IV Ostwind
During WWII, the need arose for self-propelled anti-aircraft guns capable of tracking and protecting troops against enemy fighter bombers. On the German side, the hull of the Panzer IV medium tank served as a platform for the Flakpanzer IV Wirbelwind equipped with a quadruple Flak 38 20mm mount. In late 1944, the Wirbelwind was joined by the more powerful Ostwind, armed with a 37mm Flak 43 anti-aircraft gun offering greater firing range. This weapon was housed in a hexagonal "open-top" armored turret. The Ostwind could also be used in infantry support against ground targets. The few "Ostwind" that were produced were delivered to anti-aircraft units of Panzer Divisions, and proved to be very effective in operation.
